Serving as a legislative page is a rite of passage for generations of Kansans. For decades, the Kansas Legislature has offered a legislative page program for junior high and early high school students who at at least 12 years old. This is a unique experience for students to understand the legislative process, the work that legislators and staff must do to make laws, have their picture taken with the Governor, and climb to the top of the capitol dome.
Members of the House of Representatives are authorized to have up to 10 pages annually (Senators get 20). Legislative page dates are assigned to legislators on a first-come, first-serve basis during the first week of session. Available openings fill up quickly so it is advisable to make your request to your legislator as soon as possible.
Pages are expected to dress and act in an appropriate manner and will receive a $5.00 coupon voucher to the Capitol snack bar. Additionally, pages will have their picture taken with the Governor, if available, and their sponsoring legislator. Finally, pages will have the opportunity to climb the steps to the top of the capitol dome. It is not for the faint of heart, and most stop at the 8th floor of the dome.
If your student is interested in serving as a Legislative Page, please complete the Legislative Page form. Remember that spaces are limited, so please consider applying also with your Senator.
