How the city and state are working together to bring new opportunities to Wichita

January 29, 2024

I had the opportunity to sit down with Wichita's Vice Mayor Maggie Ballard and local tattoo artists Steve and Bryan to discuss challenges the artists are experiencing with old laws prohibiting tattoo conventions in downtown Wichita. Watch the full video.

In addition to a zoning restriction that was recently updated by the Wichita City Council for the Downtown district, I was able to interface with the Kansas Board of Cosmetology to ensure the rules would permit the tattoo convention.

When these restrictions were passed more than 50 years ago, there was a stigma associated with tattoos. Now that the stigma has mostly passed, its time we update our laws so we don't miss out important economic development opportunities like tattoo conventions.

Lots of thanks to Vice Mayor Ballard for her initiative to make this happen for Wichita.

This is representative government, so tell me what is important to you! I am urging the residents of Southeast Wichita to take my Legislative Survey so that I can get a better idea of what is important to the district during the 2024 Legislation Session.

We're calling this week "Hate Week" because Republican legislators have introduced a slew of discriminatory and anti-LGBTQ bills. Most of the bills were heard in a four day period.
